Why the prefilled message matters
An empty chat window is a small barrier, and small barriers cost conversations. A prefilled message removes it and, more usefully, tells you where the customer came from.
- On a shop window — "Hi, I saw the window display and I'd like some information"
- On a product label — "Hi, I have a question about model X"
- On a table card — "Hi, I'd like to order from table 4"
- On an invoice — "Hi, I'm asking about invoice 2026-114"
Put a different message on each placement and your inbox tells you which one is working, without any analytics at all.
Number format matters
WhatsApp identifies numbers internationally. Always write the number with its country code and without a leading zero:
| Wrong | Right |
|---|---|
| 0555 000 0000 | +90 555 000 0000 |
| (555) 000-0000 | +1 555 000 0000 |
| 07700 900000 | +44 7700 900000 |
Spaces, brackets and dashes are stripped automatically — only the digits and the country code end up in the code. If a scan opens WhatsApp but says the number is invalid, the country code is almost always the reason.
Business account or personal number?
The code works with either. But if you are putting it on printed material, a WhatsApp Business account is worth the ten minutes it takes to set up: opening hours, an away message, a catalogue and quick replies all become available, and your personal number stays private.
One thing to plan for: if you change the number later, the printed code is dead. If that is a real risk, point the code at a short link on your own domain that forwards to WhatsApp — then you can change the destination without reprinting anything.
How to create a WhatsApp QR code
- Enter your number with country codeFor example +1 555 000 0000. Never start with a zero.
- Write the first messageShort and specific, so you can tell where the customer scanned it.
- Test itScan with a phone that is not yours and check the chat opens with the right message.
- Download and place itPNG for screens, SVG or PDF for print.
Frequently asked questions
Does the recipient need WhatsApp installed?
Yes. If it is not installed the link opens in a browser and offers to install it.
Can I change the message later?
Not in a printed code. If you need to change it often, point the code at a link on your own domain and change the redirect instead.
Does it work with a landline?
Only if that number has a WhatsApp Business account attached to it. Otherwise no.
Can I use it for a group chat?
Use the group invite link with the "Link" type instead. Note that anyone who scans it can join, so treat it as public.
